[Panorama shot above by Simon Gardner, a volunteer, taken minutes before the storm hit him while cycling through Kenya on the Tour d'Afrique. His full journal and pictures are here].

This is the spirit of volunteering; Ben & Jason with friends raising money in the week-long Mannequin Challenge which raised over £15,000 for St Michaels Hospice in Harrogate. Incredible vocals by Annie Drury.

Online volunteering (via Facebook)

You will have to either LOG IN or REGISTER with Facebook first but this is a video shot by Raul Caceres & friends, Project Facilitator for the NABUUR project in Menengai, Kenya.
Facebook is fast becoming another excellent medium for social networking across the globe .. enjoy!

Class assignment

I just can't wait for all to arrive and experience this for yourselves ...

Message from Nancy :

Friday we had a writing exercise in my 7th grade English class:
I quarrelled with my brother/sister about___________.

We brainstormed on the board examples - they kind of show where I am:   guarding the shamba (farm/garden),  gathering firewood, feeding the cow (meaning going out to gather the food), grazing the cow, fetching the water, cooking the food, washing the dishes, guarding the house (people don't like to leave their compounds -land/home- as people come in and steal), mopping the floor (by hand with rag), digging in the shamba.

Enjoy, Nancy

AMREF's Virtual Tours

This really is thought provoking.
AMREF has included panoramic Java-enabled tours of the Kibera slum area of Nairobi. One of our volunteers will be spending some additional time assisting in one of the area's clinics prior to joining JNMCC in Maseno. There are just so many needy people in Kenya but it is essential to focus on one project or you can find yourself simply overwhelmed.

Thank You Matt & Campsmount College, Norton, Doncaster, UK

I want to say Thank you to Matt McDonald, joining JNMCC as part of the Summer Programme.

Matt teaches Year 7 students (age 11/12 yrs) at Campsmount College in Doncaster, UK.
Campsmount are helping to print and laminate the posters and the Yr 7 pupils have been so keen to be involved they have started several initiatives around the school such as collecting stationary items and umbrellas, calendars, etc. They have also started 'pen-pal' letters with photos for the students in the area.
The local press are highlighting the students efforts and we'd also like to thank the Head Mr A Sprakes, helping to create permanent links with the schools (& already donated around £200 worth of equipment to take over later this month.)

ASANTE SANA
(thank you very much)
