In Rabuor its the chicken before the egg

Early this year one of our long-term volunteers, Zoe, as well as friends, organised a fundraiser and raised money to send to the Rabuor Self Help Group near Kisumu, western Kenya. Funds were handed over during

my visit in April and Tony Odek, director of the group has now updated us with progress on the poultry farming operation started up with the funds.

They have constructed a secure, free-range area and purchased feeds, chickens, vaccines and equipment as well as employing a caretaker. There are 50 chickens, most around 2 to 3 months old now and by the time they are producing eggs and offspring the start up funds will be depleted and the operation will be sustainable, providing meat, eggs and income for the widows looking after the children.

Ladies Fundraiser with Aid to Hospitals Worldwide

I would like to thank Deby Atkinson of Paca and Mary Wright, a trustee of AVIF, for organising a fantastic fundraising event last night in Harrogate.

Mary (right), who a few hours later jetted off to Armenia with A2HW.org.uk, was helping us raise money towards the shipping costs of sending an entire container-full of surgical and hospital equipment, sourced from UK hospitals by A2HW to the Arrowweb Community Hospital in the slum area of Kayole, Nairobi. A2HW recycle equipment from UK hospitals and send them all over the developing world.

On offer to the fundraisers were a wide range of cosmetic products and advice; make overs, nail treatments, Colouring advice. Ladies were literally queueing for a pampering and even invited back for a more leisurely appointment at Paca.

Asante sana to everyone who attended.

Heartache, despair and joy for Pius

Within a few hours we'd unfortunately received word that the Ukwala High School in Nyanza Province had suffered from a major fire in the student dorm on Monday. Fortunately no one was hurt but Pius Onyango Mbeka studies there. Pius (now 18) lived with his mother and brothers and sisters in Kano, Kisumu. Two of Pius' siblings became ill and passed away then his mother became sick and died so in 2004, Pius and the remaining siblings were taken to stay with their Aunt who could only manage to enrol them in child labour. Pius studied on his own time and was re-enrolled for exams where he scored well. Despite his efforts he could not afford to attend secondary school due to costs.

[Pius frying chips by the roadside, 2004].

We heard about Pius from a volunteer in 2007 and found a sponsor almost immediately. In 2009 another, very active volunteer, Simon, asked to help and they even managed to meet each other in 2009 while Simon cycled down through Africa with Tour d'Afrique. The money he raised doing this has paid for Pius' education so far.

Guardian, Edward, has been with Pius today as the school was forced to close while repairs were made. Edward, in mourning for the loss of his own brother this week, is already relieved for Pius, now beaming from the news that Simon can provide the chance to replace all personal belongings lost in the fire. Every child lost mattresses, shoes, blankets, bedsheets, towels, uniform, books, even food and their pocket money, none of which will be replaced by the school as there are no such funds or insurance policies in rural Kenya. Ukwala High School will replace the beds in the dormitory and is reopening Monday hopefully, although the beds may take a while to arrive.

I'd like to thank Simon for his continued support and compassion (he'll be ducking behind his monitor right now ;-) but also to mention that unfortunately there are many other children at Ukwala who will not be as lucky as Pius, unless you can help?

Sylvia showing signs of improvement

We've received another blog update from Mona with incredible photographs of Sylvia, already gaining weight and growing in strength. Mona organised a home-based carer, Selvin (pictured here) to come over to Christines house every day, having purchased the food needed for her strict diet and to cook and care for Sylvia.

We've also started fundraising for Sylvia's trip to go to Nairobi's Gertrude's Children's Hospital. If anyone is able to assist with costs, we'd really appreciate it. We have around 7,000Ksh of the necessary 30,000Ksh (US$385). Contact us if you wish to help and for more info follow Mona's blog here.

Street urchins

The Mwelu Foundation has been at it again!!

Mwelu (named after Founder, born-and-raised Mathare resident and now successful and renowned photographer/journalist, Julius Mwelu) is a self-help group operating in the Mathare Valley slum of Nairobi alongside "ambitious, positive and talented young people", helping them to realise their potential through photography and film production.

Their latest film talks about a 14 year old, Clinton Maronji, his life of bhang (cannabis) and msii (jet fuel) on the streets in Mathare and of his hopes to one day attend school. Its an eye opener!
